Suicide Is a Leading Killer in America
The following information about the nature and prevalence of suicide in America may surprise you.
2021-2022 National Suicide Statistics
- Suicide was the 11th leading cause of death for all ages.
- For ages 10-14 and 25-34, suicide was the second leading cause of death.
- Suicide was the third leading cause of death for ages 15-24.
- For ages 35-44, suicide was the fifth leading cause of death.
- For ages 45-54, suicide was the sixth leading cause of death.
- Suicide was the ninth leading cause of death for ages 55-65.
- There were nearly two times as many suicides (48,183) in the United States as there were homicides (26,031).
- In 2021 , the suicide rate among males was 4 times higher (22.8 per 100,000) than among females (5.7 per 100,000).
- Among females, the suicide rate was highest for those aged 45-64 (8.2 per 100,000).
- Among males, the suicide rate was highest for those aged 75 and older (42.2 per 100,000).
- The rates of suicide for males were highest for
- American Indian/Alaskan Native, Non-Hispanic (43.4 per 100,000) and
- White, Non-Hispanic (30.0 per 100,000).
- Among females the rates of suicide were highest for
- American Indian/Alaskan Native, Non-Hispanic females (13.5 per 100,000) and
- White, Non-Hispanic females (7.5 per 100,000).
- 8,000 deaths by suicide in 2021.
- 1 death every 11 minutes
- 12.3 million considered suicide, and 3.5 million made a plan.
- 1.7 million attempted suicide
- Firearms are used in more than 50% of the suicides.

- Suicide was the second leading cause of death for the following age groups: 10-14, 15-24, and 25-34.
- For ages 35-44, suicide was the fifth leading cause of death.
- For ages 45-54, suicide was the seventh leading cause of death.
- Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death for ages 55-64.
