Fashion Stars: Hope for Crisis Support in Texas

The Beginning of Fashion Stars

Over 20 years ago, a chance meeting between Margie Wright, Executive Director of the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas, and Yvonne Crum took place at a charity event. This meeting lead to Margie asking Yvonne to help raise $25,000 by organizing an event around the issue of suicide that potential donors would want to attend. Since that time, over two million dollars have been raised for our crisis center’s programs! Crisis centers like our local helpline operates based on the generosity and support of the community.

Hear from Yvonne as she tells what organizing Fashion Stars means to her, and what she hopes it can bring to all who attend.

Fashion Brings Hope to Those in Crisis

I have loved all 20+ years working with the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas! It has been a learning experience from the very beginning—one I never expected to be so close to my heart and mind, changing my life forever.

At first, I just wanted to gather a few people to help me raise funds for what I knew was an important and much-needed cause, all while focusing on fashion. But it didn’t take long for me to realize that I was truly blessed to be part of something much bigger—a cause that gives people a place to express thoughts and feelings they might not otherwise share.

Fashion + Compassion = Hope. Selling potential donors on the mission of a compassionate organization that provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, education and training programs for teens, and support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide was the easy part. The hard part was organizing a social gathering around an issue that is often whispered about. But what I came to understand is that those who have chosen suicide all had one thing in common—they wanted hope. And the greatest examples of hope are the people who desire to be good stewards of their community.

That realization inspired me to help create a way to engage the community in raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention. We select men and women annually to serve as fundraising ambassadors—our Fashion Stars—who work tirelessly to promote the event, a true celebration of fashion and compassion. Through their efforts and the enormous support of this community, we have raised so much for this vital cause. And with continued support, we can keep spreading hope and preventing suicide for years to come.
